Oviposition experience promotes active reproductive behaviour in a synovigenic parasitoid

چکیده
Parasitoids are important insects that commonly released into the environment to reduce population sizes of pest species. The lifetime reproductive success parasitoids mainly depends on host availability and mature eggs. Consequently, it is predicted female wasps must balance risk egg or (time) limitation with maximized fecundity. Typically, synovigenic females, which continue eggs throughout their lifetime, have been shown adjust production rate in response environmental variations limitation. In this study, we found a parasitoid, Anastatus japonicus (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae), oviposition experience Ana. females significantly enhanced load increased production. However, contrast other studies, contact did not affect females. This result suggests overall might induce an adjustment accelerate maturation likely more than transitory contract. addition affecting load, influenced behaviour, shifted virgin behavioural preferences from mating laying per clutch. Our study provides optimal strategy for post-oviposition release , parasitoid several lepidopteran forest pests, improve biocontrol effectiveness.

Early oviposition experience affects patch residence time in a foraging parasitoid
Parasitoids learn olfactory and visual cues that are associated with their hosts, and use these cues to forage more efficiently. Classical conditioning theory predicts that encounters with high-quality hosts will lead to better learning of host-associated cues than encounters with low-quality hosts. We tested this prediction in a two-phase laboratory experiment with the parasitoid Trichogramma ...
متن کاملThe Transcriptomic Basis of Oviposition Behaviour in the Parasitoid Wasp Nasonia vitripennis
Linking behavioural phenotypes to their underlying genotypes is crucial for uncovering the mechanisms that underpin behaviour and for understanding the origins and maintenance of genetic variation in behaviour. Recently, interest has begun to focus on the transcriptome as a route for identifying genes and gene pathways associated with behaviour. For many behavioural traits studied at the phenot...
متن کاملEgg maturation, egg resorption and the costliness of transient egg limitation in insects.
Although there is widespread agreement that the cost of oviposition underlies selective oviposition in insects, there is no consensus regarding which factors mediate the cost of oviposition. Models have suggested that egg costs are often paramount in those insects that do not continue to mature eggs during the adult stage (pro-ovigenic insects). Here we address the hypothesis that egg costs are...
متن کاملOviposition behavior of Coccidoxenoides peregrinus, a parasitoid of Planococcus ficus
The encyrtid parasitoid, Coccidoxenoides peregrinus has been used as a biological control agent against the mealybugs Planococcus citri and Planococcus ficus. This study examined the behavior and host selection of C. peregrinus attacking P. ficus. Adult parasitoids were fed a 0.1% solution of acridine orange, a DNA binding dye used to label C. peregrinus eggs. In a choice test, adult parasitoid...
متن کاملParasitoid foraging and oviposition behavior in the field
Since parasitoids can be reared from their hosts and leave evidence of parasitism after they emerge from hosts, some general outlines of their foraging behavior can be inferred from field studies that do not involve direct observation. However, direct observations are often needed to uncover critical aspects of patch use, host finding, and host use. Studies of parasitoid foraging in the field u...
